You’re Invited | A Conversation With Our Partners

By eric, November 15, 2012

R + S

We’re really excited to offer you the opportunity to connect with two of our partners from Zimbabwe. Rob and Stephanie Davy will be in the United States soon and during the week of December 2nd – 9th we’re going to host several conference calls with them. We want to use this opportunity to  allow you to hear first hand about the work they are doing in Zim, ask questions you might have for them, learn more about opportunities to get involved and hear first hand about the new direction of the Elias Fund.

If you’re interested in joining one of these calls, please sign up below. We will be in touch with more info once we have an idea of how many calls we will have, set dates, times and call-in information.

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rob and Steph and can’t wait to chat!

MEET THE TEAM Part 2: TJ

By eric, March 29, 2012

Welcome to Part 2 of our MEET THE TEAM series. Today we’d like to introduce you to Allentown, PA’s very own, TJ.

TJ was born and currently resides in Allentown, PA. After TJ graduated from Ursinus College, he moved to Jiangxi, China for a year, teaching freshman English at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. Upon returning from China, he began the next part of his educational journey by returning to school to earn his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. TJ will graduate in May of 2012 (just a couple months away!) with his PhD and in his words, “it has been a long time coming.” TJ married his college sweetheart (and fellow trip participant), Kyle (Kauffman) Shaughnessy on June 13, 2009. They had the Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Kalas of the Philadelphia Philies announce them as husband and wife, as well as their parents, and the entire wedding party. Needless to say, TJ and his wife are huge Phillies fans. They like going to concerts, music festivals, traveling and doing service whenever possible. TJ is a member of Calling All Crows, a non-profit organization that partners with musicians and fans to create change through hands-on service and activism. Most recently he  volunteered with many partnering organizations, including Amplifying Education, Baby Buggy, The Action Center to End World Hunger, in addition to volunteering for Lose the Training Wheels day camp for children with disabilities.

What does this trip to Zimbabwe mean to you?

This trip to Zimbabwe seems like the culmination of many different parts of my life.  This is an all-encompassing trip that will give me the ability to utilize portions of my education and volunteer experience to help make a change in the world-wide community.

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?TJ

I would say the craziest thing I have ever done is when I moved to China. It was the summer after I graduated from Ursinus College and I decided I wanted to travel and see the world.  I applied for a job teaching English, and without any knowledge of the customs, country or language, I packed up my things and moved the Nanchang, Jiangxi, without a familiar face within 8,000 miles of me.  It was an amazing experience, and certainly educational, both mentally and personally.

Quote from your favorite movie?

Almost Famous: “Never take it seriously, if you never take it seriosuly, you never get hurt. If you never get hurt, you always have fun; and if you ever get lonely, just go down to the record store and visit your friends.”

Who/What do you think about when you hear the phrase, ”I am strong if You are strong”?

When I hear “I am strong if you are strong,” I think about my wife, my friends, my family.  It is an outstanding motto to live by. One of my friends gave me the Elias bracelet a few years ago, and I think it is a gift that speaks volumes about friendship and dedication.  I am only okay if you are okay; so I will make sure you are always taken care of, protected and safe.  It is a statement of generosity, that says you will always come before me.

MEET THE TEAM: Ashley

By eric, March 23, 2012

Over the next few months we’ll be introducing the members of our team that will be traveling to Zimbabwe this summer. With that said, meet Ashley!

Ashley is from Glenview, Illinois and currently residing in Chicago. She is a Technology Integration Specialist at a private school in Lincoln Park. In addition to being a teacher, Ashley is earning her Master’s degree in Teaching English as a Second Language at Northeastern Illinois University. She loves spending time cheering on the Chicago Cubs, Bears, Blackhawks, and Bulls, as well as the Indiana Hoosiers. Ashley also loves hanging out with family and friends and can often be found at the beach with her dog Xenu.

What does this trip to Zimbabwe mean to you? This trip means the world to me! I studied abroad at the University of Western Australia as an undergraduate at Indiana University. While studying in Perth, Australia, I met and became friends with some incredible people, and a fair amount of them are from Zimbabwe. Between their stories and the

Ashley Jahrausamazing story of Elias, I have always wanted to visit Zimbabwe and this trip will allow me to do so while making a positive impact on the community in Chiredzi.

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?

A large percentage of my crazy stories stem from my travels overseas; one of the craziest things I have done was snorkel with whale sharks on the west coast of Australia. Whale sharks are the world’s biggest fish and are approximately the size of a school bus!

Quote from your favorite movie?

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”  -Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Who/What do you think about when you hear the phrase, “I am strong if You are strong”?

I think about all of the people in the communities that I have visited and been a part of from Glenview, Chicago, Bloomington, Indiana, to the rural areas in Guatemala, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, and across the world in Australia. You never know what kind of impact you will make on a person or a community. Something as simple as a smile to as tremendous as investing your time in a community service project. People need to remain strong themselves, in order to help people in their own community, as well as going outside of their comfort zone to help others. If everyone kept this mantra close to his or her heart, the world would be an even better place.

Check out Ashley’s fundraising efforts here and stay tuned for more team member bios coming soon!
