Stoves for Albert Street School … and more!

By scott, April 9, 2010

We just received a great update from our partners at Albert Street School … new stoves! Thanks to the generosity of our friends Pam and Martha, the students at Albert Street will once again enjoy hot meals.

Also, the school’s headmaster is reporting that this month the school will most likely receive full certification from South Africa’s Department of Education. This is comes as extraordinary news for the refugee school given the precarious circumstances surrounding Zimbabweans in South Africa. Gaining legitimate recognition from the SA government is a considerable step forward.

And finally, renovations are ongoing at the school as we try to create the best educational environment for the 300+ students at Albert Street. If you have any interest in aiding the redevelopment of Albert Street School’s infrastructure please consider donating here. Of course, all donations are tax-deductible. Thanks for supporting Zimbabwean education!

EF’s co-director, Scott, is heading back over to Zimbabwe for three weeks to empower our partners with the storytelling tools of Flip cameras and laptops. Follow his video blogs here on the website, on Twitter, or on our Facebook Page.

Many thanks to Christina, Mark, Jake, Ellen and Darcie for the laptop donations! We are incredibly excited to empower our partners with the capabilities of mobile technology and allow them to share their stories and voices more freely. A shout-out is owed to Flip Video as well for the camera’s Scott will be distributing to our partners.

Stay tuned for more video posts!

Save the planet and empower a Zimbabwean student

Have you ever wondered how your old lap-top will waste away in a landfill somewhere outside of town? It’s not a pretty sight. Electronics, including lap-tops, are one of the greatest contributors of heavy metal pollutants. You don’t have to be a tree-hugger to know that’s probably not a good thing.

Solution? Donate your second-hand laptop to the Elias Fund! We recently received an email from our partners in Chiredzi asking for laptops for their scholarship beneficiaries. The lack of funding for public universities has made access to working computers sharply inadequate. The students are finding it difficult to study and complete assignments given the poor access to technology.

So if you want to empower these students with the best possible learning environment, and help the global environment at the same time, please let us know. Donate your old lap-top today. It’s a win-win for everyone!
