By admin, April 27, 2009

I had a chance to talk with Scott in Chiredzi, Zimbabwe over the weekend. Below is a link to a recording of him talking about their time htwin Johannesburg with our partners at the Albert Street School. Our current fundraising campaign is in conjunction with the Heard the World Foundation, founded by music group O.A.R. All proceeds raised during this campaign are being directed to our partners at Albert Street School. Please take a moment to listen to this brief update. Every donation, no matter how small or large, makes a huge difference in the lives of these refugee stuedents in Johannesburg.

Update from our traveling team in Africa

By admin, April 19, 2009

An email came in yesterday (April 18) from our team in currently traveling in South Africa and Zimbabwe (click here to meet the team), they gave a brief description of their time in Johannesburg with our partner Albert Street School -

We’ve spent the last two days at Albert Street School in downtown Joburg… Alpha, the director of the school, shared with us that the situation in Zimbabwe is so bad that even children, some as young as 7 years old, are running away alone and fleeing the country.  Today, because it was Saturday, we spent the day with kids at a nearby park enjoying some relaxation and playing futbol.  I’m sad to say, the “foreigners” team lost 2-0.

If you have not seen our current campaign for Albert Street School, check out our Empowering Refugee Student page. The team  arrived in Zimbabwe today and are with our partners at YET.

To follow along with Scott’s Twitter updates, go to the Elias Fund Twitter page and become a follower.

All the best to each of you.

O.A.R and the Elias Fund

By admin, April 13, 2009

htw.jpgWe’re excited to announce that the Elias Fund recently won the Shine a Light Charity Contest through music group O.A.R’s Heard the World foundation! Thanks to the initiative of Liz Dropo, we’ve been awarded $5,000. The gifted funds will go to our partners at Albert Street School, empowering over 400 Zimbabwean refugee children in South Africa with holistic education. Many thanks to Liz and the guys of O.A.R! Now let’s take it a step further…

We want to take O.A.R’s support and demonstrate the power of a grassroots movement. With over 3,600 of you joined to EF’s Facebook cause,  our goal is to match O.A.R.’s generosity. But imagine this: A $10 donation from each of you would incredibly exceed our goal. And if you invited just three of your friends to join our cause and make a small contribution as well . . . we will make Elias Fund history!

Together, as a movement, WE can spark hope and opportunity in the lives of Zimbabwean refugees! The children at Albert Street School have fled their homeland, many orphaned or separated from their families. The refugee community in Johannesburg, South Africa has come together with the Elias Fund to ensure the future of these children. Let us put history on their side!

What’s more is that EF’s co-director, Scott, will be traveling to Albert Street School, leaving tomorrow (April 14), and YOU can follow via Twitter. Join him as he relates back to you the impacts of your involvement in this grassroots movement.

So join O.A.R and the Elias Fund as we empower Zimbabwean refugees. Then follow us on Twitter to hear first-hand the impacts of your efforts. It’s that simple!
